I got into points and miles in 2011, and over the years it's grown from a personal hobby into a way to create some pretty incredible experiences for my family.
For someone who loves engineering, personal finance, and a great deal, points and miles turned out to be a perfect hobby. There are numbers to crunch, systems to figure out, and opportunities to uncover. And unlike most spreadsheets, this one can end with a plane ticket somewhere incredible.
I've never been interested in collecting points just to watch the balances grow or chasing some theoretical measure of value. I love the puzzle, but the puzzle isn't the point. The trip is. That moment when everything comes together, you hit book, and start thinking about the adventure waiting on the other end still doesn't get old.
Over the years, friends and family started bringing me their own puzzles. Which card should I get? What can I do with these points? How do we make this trip happen? The answer was rarely just one card or one clever redemption. The best answer came from stepping back and looking at the whole picture, including what you have, how you spend, how you travel, and, most importantly, where you want to go.
